The Armidale School’s opens rugby teams put on a great show to defeat St Ignatius College Riverview in the top four fixtures at TAS on 25 July, with the visitors taking the victories in the lower divisions.
Playing in the AAGPS Thirds competition, the TAS Firsts defeated Riverview Thirds 26-5 in a game of strong defence, leaving the citysiders with one try eight minutes into the second half. For TAS, tries went to Joe Kingham (Limbri), Will Claridge (Bundarra), Charlie McGowan (Barraba) and Harrison Jackson (Old Bar), with Will Archer (Nambucca Heads) converting three from four.
The solid victory comes on the back of a narrow loss to Shore in Sydney last weekend. TAS has now had two wins and one loss in the competition, equal to Scots, Sydney Grammar and Shore with St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill on top with two wins and a bye.
TAS players wore a blue sock for Batyr, an organisation promoting mental health in young people, and spectators supported a student-lead collection to raise funds for Batyr’s in-school mental health presentations.
The TAS Seconds defeated the Riverview Fifths 74-5, and the TAS Thirds outplayed a makeup Riverview side 47-5. The 16As also secured a victory over the visitors, while Riverview took out the games in six lower divisions, with a 7-7 draw for the 13As.
This weekend more than 200 TAS boys will take buses to play Newington College at Stanmore.
