It may be the middle of winter and but swimmers from The Armidale School’s co-educational Junior School hit the University of New England pool with enthusiasm on 18 August, retaining honours at the Hanna Shield Swimming Carnival.
Six primary schools compete in the carnival, a team event with swimmers competing in boys and girls divisions in 50metre freestyle and 50metre medley relays. The event has been running since the UNE pool opened in 1979 and this year TAS students Tom Ball, Oliver Smart, Hugh Taylor and Abbott White and senior primary boys Joseph Anderson (swimming in his fourth Hanna Shield), Sam Ball, John McGregor -Thew and Sam Skipper swam great races to take home the boys category trophy for another year.
The Hanna family have sponsored the trophy since the carnival’s inception and this year Gerard Hanna and his mother Jenny presented the trophy to all winners. TAS thanks the Hanna family for their contribution to the community and wishes them well for their future endeavours.
