‘IMAGINATION’ will be both the theme and the tool of trade for hundreds of bright young minds when they attend a prestigious academic inter-school competition at The Armidale School next week.
More than 550 gifted and talented students from state and independent schools will be challenged by a suite of activities at the Northern NSW da Vinci Decathlon, to be hosted by TAS for the fifth year.
The Decathlon was developed by Knox Grammar School and is now held in regional venues across Australia, with students competing in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Mathematics and Chess; English; Science; Code Breaking; Engineering Challenge; Philosophy; Creative Producer; Art and Poetry; Cartography; General Knowledge.
Year 7 and 8 teams will take part on Wednesday 23 August, followed by Years 5 and 6 on 24 August, and Years 9 and 10 on Friday 25 August. Schools from Armidale, Inverell, Tamworth, Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Narrabri, Moree, Dubbo, and Glen Innes will be taking part in this year’s Decathlon.
TAS is hosting the northern NSW championships for the fifth time, having regularly attended the state championships at Knox, where earlier this year the TAS Year 6 team placed second in the Cartography section.
“The theme of ‘imagination’ leads from the fantasy and wild imaginings of Lewis Carroll to the great minds who dared to imagine the world differently, through Science, Cartography or Engineering,” coordinator Catherine Boydell said.
“Imagine announcing the possibility that the world was actually not flat, and space travel was achievable. One of the greatest creative and imaginative minds of course belonging to Leonardo da Vinci, the name sake of our competition.”
