“What technology can you make to create a lucid dream, and what happens if you keep dreaming it?” Such was one of the scenarios posed to Year 5 and 6 students who were among 620 bright young boys and girls from Years 5-10 attending the sixth Northern NSW da Vinci Decathlon at The Armidale School this week. If you’ve never eaten liquid nitrogen ice cream, had a peek of Virtual Reality or printed something in 3D, this Saturday (1 September) might just be your day. Dozens of fun activities will be on offer when The Armidale School launches the TAS STEM Academy, an initiative to bring together learning connected to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, across subject areas. The public open day, like the STEM Academy itself, is particularly focused on boys and girls aged 4-14 and aligns with TAS Junior and Middle Schools, which offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years and Middle Years programmes. More than 600 bright young minds from across the state will be gathering in Armidale later this week to compete at one of the largest and most prestigious academic inter-school gala days in regional NSW. A top ten result for the first girl home and a new record for the fastest TAS student were highlights of the City to Surf fun run in Sydney on 12 August for the 272 strong team from The Armidale School. The largest school team in the world’s largest fun run by a country mile, the northern students certainly made their presence felt along the 14km route. First home for TAS was Samuel Jones of Gunnedah in 56:12, knocking more than 30 seconds off the previous record for a TAS runner and improving his time of last year by more than four minutes. A gold medal performance from the senior boys relay team was the highlight of results for 10 TAS riders who competed in Mountain Bike Australia’s Schools’ Championships at the Gold Coast on 3-5 August. Duncan Chalmers, Hamish Chalmers, Archie Chick and Marcus Worth (Great Lakes College but riding for TAS) completed 11 laps of the Year 11/12 boys XC Enduro course (6km) in a time of 4:21:55, and were the first full school team to complete the challenging event. A win against the school that has produced the second highest number of All Blacks was among the highlights for dozens of rugby players from The Armidale School that returned home on Monday (9 July) from a cross-Tasman development tour. The 46-man squad of under16s and Year 11 Opens players gained insight from their action on the field and in specialised training sessions with elite level coaches during the 11-day visit. Murder, blackmail and car theft will be on the agenda for dozens of students in Armidale this week – not as offenders but as crime solvers at the longest-running forensic science camp for secondary students in the country. Starting today (10 July) and running until Saturday 14 July, The Armidale School Forensic Science Camp has this year attracted 89 boys and girls from 28 schools in NSW, Qld, the ACT and for the first time, the Northern Territory. Just hours after arriving in the Land of the Long White Cloud this morning (Friday 29 June), rugby players from The Armidale School were on the paddock training for an 11-day tour where they will be face some of the best young rugby players in New Zealand. The 46-man squad of under16s and Opens players, accompanied by five staff, will face Cromwell College, West Otago under 18s, Christchurch Boys’ High School and Shirley Boys High School in games that will test their mettle and skills. They will also experience training sessions with elite level Canterbury and Crusaders coaches, have breakfast with All Blacks Sam Whitelock, Codie Taylor and Jack Goodhue and attend a Super Rugby fixture between Crusaders and Highlanders.... Two students from The Armidale School will be mixing it with the best from schoolboy rugby this week, having been selected for GPS duties. Ben Hamparsum of Currabubula will start as loose head prop and Nicholas Makeham from Walcha is expected to get a run from the bench in the centres, when the duo take to the field for GPS White against GPS Blue at St Joseph’s College this morning. It will be city versus country in rugby, football, basketball and tennis matches when around 150 students from Sydney Boys’ High make their annual pilgrimage for sporting fixtures against The Armidale School this weekend (22-23 June). Teams from both schools will be looking for wins to claim the Hannon & Harris Cup named for long-time staff members at each school and currently held by TAS.
